PRO 4 - Myths and Realities of Ground Source Heat Pumps

Thursday, October 09, 2008  ·  8:30 AM - 10:00 AM

"Geothermal Heating and Cooling" systems are sometimes touted as "renewable energy" or "free" heating and cooling for your home, with promises of $50 monthly heating bills and 5 - 7 year paybacks when installed in existing homes. Despite the alluring claims, what are the real economics of heat pump operation in the northeast? How do the carbon emissions compare?  This session will provide an overview of how ground source heat pumps work, and explore realistic operating efficiencies, pitfalls to avoid, what to look for in a quality installation, and how to compare an investment in geothermal to an investment in the building enclosure.
